We need blood and a lot of it. In fact in every three second someone in the US needs it whether it is for having a baby , undergoing surgery, treatments for cancer or chronic medical conditions like anemia , blood saves millions of life. But the catch is we can only get it from each other, which is why many altruistic people in the world donate blood . Some 6.8 million people in US donate blood every year but where does all these blood goes after it leaves our body ,does it go to the patient on the street or another city.
Let's see with the protonation stage, first test tubes of your blood are checked in order to find if there is any infectious diseases and blood type. At the same time , our point of blood or unit as it is called goes into a giant spinning centerfuse where it is separated into three different components, red blood cells, platelets and plasma. In each of these had a designated function. Red blood cells give your blood it's colour in a protein called haemoglobin which helps to transfer oxygen and carbon dioxide to and from your lungs. This is what is given to patients undergoing surgery or those with low blood cell count like anemia. Platelets are fragments of other cells and they help your blood coagulate properly. They are commonly used for cancer patients whose platelets have been affected with chemotherapy and finally, plasma is a yellowish liquid that's a mixture of water, salt and enzymes but also in our bodies clotting factors and proteins. Plasma primary function is to be the liquid that shuffles throughout your body . It can be broken down further . The proteins in our bodies can be extracted and concentrated in therapies for where conic conditions.
The next step is storing all of this collective good stuff, each of these components are actually are stored for different amount of times in caring temperatures. Platelets can last up to 3 days , red blood cells can last up to 42 days and plasma can last up to an year. So platelets and red blood cells are usually used within a country they were collected from but plasma since it can stored for so long and is in such high demand globally is the one which shipped overseas. If someone in US donated today the plasma can be sent to places like Australia , Canada , Belgium and other lands. We don’t even know that, plasma has a huge global market and the US is one of the major exports and that's because it is one of the only country to pay donors specifically for their plasma.
According to the data from the US Census Bureau plasma , vaccines and blood exports in 27 teams were valued at about 20 billion dollars. Dr. Robert Slonim a global economist of the university of Sydney estimates that 80% of the world market is receiving plasma from some place outside its country of origin . But this is what's get things sticky ,giving a paid incentive like that is controversial. The demand for blood and plasma is so high that economist argue it can't be sustained. But the world other organisation finds the ethics pay donations complicated and there have been concerns with people lying about their health. Based on this research in the field though Dr. Slonim believes that not giving a payment that is directly cash like a T-shirt or a gift card and they see positivity increases which was approximately 40%. Where now with the need of blood so high , tapping into a natural autism may be the best method. So now that we know what happens to a blood after donating are we more inclined to do so , if yes then come forward and donate blood .
